Musings
I’m writing this piece at a Third Wave outlet, sipping on an iced tea. Fresh after receiving my paycheck and completing my quarterly targets, it felt right to treat myself to some caffeine, so that my Friday could last a bit longer. Finance Team were gracious to release the paycheck earlier than usual, so more reasons for cheer :)
Cafés provide me with new dimensions of observation whenever I visit. As a person who visits cafés alone, it sometimes feels intrusive to check the crowd out while sipping on a beverage. Here are some of my thoughts:
Overpouring Emotions
I have been in situations where patrons shared happiness in passing, silent tears, shared camaraderie, etc.
I’m sitting at this table, where a lady seated across me is shedding tears, a laptop in front of her, while on a call.
For me, it has always been a bit uncomfortable to hear someone shedding a tear. It never felt personal. It felt like I was intruding into something private. The patron on her side gave her a concerned look.
Eventually, the person on the other end was able to calm her down and make her laugh. I don’t know what came over me then, but it felt relieving. Handing a tissue over would have been a human thing to do, but I guess she’s alright. I hope that she stays that way.
I recall another incident where I was working out of a café in mid-2024. The timing was 8–9 am, fairly early for Bangalore café standards. A foreign couple was seated behind me, holding hands. It felt intrusive at the moment, but they were seated behind me. I remember plugging in my earphones to give them privacy.
Cue to plugging my charger at the supply located behind me, I witnessed a quiet moment where the lady laid on the man's shoulder, shedding silent tears.
In that moment, it didn’t feel like I was in a café anymore, just witnessing something quietly human. Cafés haven’t felt quite the same to me since.
Sips Coffee
People visit cafés to work out of a relaxed atmosphere. A charger supply, ample light, food within reach, and peace are what professionals require.
At a time when cafés are actively discouraging table hogging (yours truly is guilty of it as well), cafés feel like another office. Active discussions on tech on one table, pitch decks on another, coffee as a side dish and an offering to power through the day, coworking, etc. An escape from your typical office when you need a change of environment.
People have their choice of beverages on offer - especially at a coffee shop. I think I’m getting side looks while seated with an iced tea and typing this out :)
Occasion
A café may have been the first date spot for many of us here. It’s relaxed, a preferred option, giving couples and would-bes the space to carry a conversation.
I’m more of an ambience person, placing taste last.
Interactions are the things that matter the most, along with shared memories :)
Maybe it’s also why I’ve grown particular about how I sit in cafés
I personally love being seated with a cushion at a café, the kind you can place on your lap and hold onto, even when things feel like they’re slipping out of hand.
I’m also a fan of couches, where interactions don’t have to feel like an interview. The ultimate comfort is having your partner-in-crime seated beside you. No eye contact, just a silent agreement to stay quiet, talking while looking into the distance. There’s no awkward silence there.
For now, these are just a few thoughts that stayed with me.
I bid goodbye to the faces that kept me company - faces whose names I may never know, and the glass quietly whisked away by my smiling attender.
I’ll come back to this table again, soon.
