Kerala Cafe (2009) : Off-Season - Happiness in Passing

Musings

Shyamaprasad has been able to convey the everyday happenings in the life of a guide beautifully through this segment. The ease of handling languages, standing agreements with dealers, the street-smart mentality, tricks up their sleeve to secure a buck and their observant (critical but humorous) commentary on tourists that visit the beach during the holidays. With the added twang of the Trivandrum slang.

After the emotional weight of the previous stories, the cafe takes a small step back and breathes. This one's a bit more light-hearted, so let's relax.

No overt analysis, no pondering for deeper meanings. Let's breathe easy with this one, with a smile :)

Reel 7 : Off-Season

On the sun-kissed beach of Kovalam, a Portuguese couple arrives with little money and even fewer plans. A local tourist guide, always on the lookout for a quick opportunity, finds himself dealing with them. Simply part hustle, part survival.

What begins as a chance encounter slowly turns into something more human. A conversation unfolds during the onset of a power imbalance, stories are shared, and the tourist eventually breaks down, speaking about unemployment and the uncertainty he carries. You could sense the exact moment where the guide's arrogance evaporates in the air.In that moment, the emotional distance between traveller and guide disappears.

They are simply two people trying to get by. Struggling, with no immediate answer in sight, but just making it to another day.

And by the end, under the cheerful notes of an old Malayalam song, they dance together on the beach, swaying to it's tune, and in shared cheer. Differences melting away in the distance, in a shared moment

A small moment, but beautifully understated.

Black (2004) - Raw, Gritty and Stylish

"Black: The man from Darkness" Neo-noir films have that magical allure to excite people and to compel them to explore the greyer areas of the drama called life. For people that enjoy and have a sense of morbid curiosity about what happens in the darker avenues of life, this genre is a definite route to escapism. Black is one such attempt from the famed Ranjith-Mammooty combination and I respect the superstar for choosing such a dark and complex subject and playing the role to perfection. Churned from actor Lal's own Lal Release, Karikamuri Shanmughan or Kumbhari is an iconic character in Mammootty's long alley of iconic career characters and holds an undoubted sense of swag to this day.   Credits - Bl...

Rosapoo (2018) - An Offbeat attempt at something bold

Rosapoo Movie Poster Source: IMBD Being an avid fan of films that handle quirky subjects, Rosapoo is one such effort from Malayalam Cinema, that remains unexplored by many. Handling the subject of the adult film industry that's set on the backdrop of the late nineties and early noughties, and it's impact on churning films that reigned supreme in the cinema kottakas (theaters) at that time .  It provides a curious snapshot of those forgotten and indecorous days of old, in the Malayalam Film Industry. Days that the Malayalam Film Industry would like to forget, memories that are stowed away into a silent and forgotten shutter in the attic of our minds.
